President Barack Obama has nominated Ben Rhodes to serve as ambassador to the United Nations.
Rhodes, who served as Obama’s chief of staff during his first term, has a background in international relations, as well as law.
He previously worked as a lawyer for the Federal Trade Commission.
Rhodes has previously served on the board of the National Endowment for Democracy, which was created by Obama in 2009.
He also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The president nominated Rhodes in a letter to the Senate, which is expected to be signed by Obama on Friday.
“Ben’s extensive experience in the foreign policy and national security field will enhance our national security and economic prosperity,” the letter read.
“He will be an important and trusted advisor to the President in the future.”
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday approved Rhodes’ nomination, with nine Democrats voting against it.
Democrats are not expected to bring him up for a floor vote, which would require a majority vote.
The White House said that Rhodes’ experience in international affairs, and his “great intellect,” would “benefit our national interest.”
